Smiling Jim

I will finish Final Fantasy XIII….eventually but it’s not really a gaming priority at the moment to say the least. A have a semi-review post circling around in my half-complete pile, but my priorities are elsewhere.

Anyway, I spent a huge chunk of Sunday getting back into the Loremaster grind because I kind of want to complete that achievement before uuuh the next expansion pack lol. EveryQuest + Quest Helper + Tom Tom = cheap, but fast as hell questing. I ground out around a hundred or so; So that leaves me at around 40 to 50 away from completing Kalimdor. After I complete Kalimdor, all I need to do is polish off a handful of things from the Outlands, which should be cake.

The majority of my questing was done in Dustwallow Marsh, a zone that I apparently skipped (could have sworn that I had completed most of it; Must have been on my hunter). I recall passing by Smiling Jim quite often before Vanilla WoW Onyxia raids. I just figured that he was some random NPC, placed in Theramore for comedic value, never realizing that he actually had a back story and a pretty well done quest chain. The poor guy 🙁

Video: Boom De Yada WoW

Courtesy of you-know-who-you-are. Hah, I like this one; It’s funny/cute, though the song was stuck in my head for a good day or so. I don’t go out of my way to watch too many WoW music videos, but this one was pretty well done and well produced.

On Choice Based Gameplay and WoW Updates

WoWScrnShot_020610_182149

Ah sorry, real life and uuuh not so real life cuts into my precious WoW time. Twitch. In between games at time moment. So I finished both Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2, which is a great game by the way. Not perfect, but among games that offer decision tree based dialogue, BioWare does a pretty decent job especially compared to say, BioShock for example and how your decisions influenced the game (I’ll be good and not spoil it despite the fact that it’s pretty old by now…).

I mean, ultimately there are only a handful of ways that any decision based game can end no matter what you choose but everyone’s Mass Effect play through is a different experience depending on what dialogue options they picked and who they partied with. It’s fun seeing what path other people chose. This sort of gameplay is closer to what PC based role-playing should be, to me at least. I wonder if Blizzard would ever add anything similar to WoW at some point in the future. Actually, I am not really sure how that would even work in a massively multiplayer environment…

So long story short, I and am more-or-less putzing around until Final Fantasy XIII comes out in early March. I think I’ll hold off on buying anything new and finish something from my stack of old unfinished games. Probably going to actually cyle back into a period of heavier WoW playing if the servers manage to let me in. Proudmoore has been awful since patch 3.3.2.

We have tanking alternatives now so I have been gleefully DPSing as of late. Consequently, my Protection set has atrophied a little bit to the point where it is marginally acceptable for the new content. But here’s the problem: I don’t really have time anymore to farm for multiple sets of gear and since I’m not tanking primary spec (and don’t tank much anymore), I don’t typically roll on tanking pieces unless they get greeded out.

Being hit by a mild case of altism again. I would love to work on my hunter again if I have time (barely have enough time to work on my paladin. Long commute FTL). Or, I could just leave him as a glorified transmute/smelt/mining bot and finish off the Loremaster achievement on my paladin before the expansion hits. So close but so little motivation to quest more!

Oh, I got a new gaming mouse a few weeks ago. I’ll make a hardware post about it at some point. It has more buttons. More buttons mean that I can bind even more random macros. Oh, I am open to post suggestions by the way. I have been in the mood to update more but have hit a post idea dry spell.

Update: CES, Dragon Age & WoW

butt-rockets

Hey everyone Blizzard updated the WoW Armory. Neat! Err, been generally absentish over the past week (or so…) doing holiday stuff and preparing for/attending CES over in Las Vegas. I’ll do a quick post later this week if I have time. It was lots of fun; the company I kept was the best part (you know who you are <3).

Oh Dragon Age is fun by the way. My obsessive need to play every quest to completion is actually the other reason why I have been “absentish” and not on WoW as much as I usually am. I should post a belated review when I complete it. I think I am almost towards the end. It’s a pretty long game.

So I’ve had to send in a couple of tickets the past two weeks. We totally bugged out the Skybreaker encounter two weeks ago. Noobness happened which resulting in a successful kill with only the people in the cannons up; The loot master not being one of those two people. So consequently, the chest wasn’t lootable. Oh, we also got the [I’m on a Boat] achievement despite not really earning it…lol? Kudos to Blizzard for resolving that issue even though it took forever. Protip: don’t email support during a holiday weekend.

The other support ticket: Long story short, one of our officers got hacked last week. The hacker cleaned out not only all of his characters, but the entire guild bank as well (time to review bank access policies for the sake of security). Blizzard did a complete restore, but since I am the guild master, I now have the entire contents of our guild bank in my mailbox. Is this what I get for putting off sorting the bank for the past year or two?

Merry Christmas! (Random Update)

WoWScrnShot_121809_223304

I’m having a lot of fun doing the new content. We got Marrowgar, Lady Deathwhisper and the Airship down last Friday, which was nice after kind of a slow raid the week before. Improvement is nice! Deathbringer might have gone down if my internet hadn’t decided to take a huge dump on me. We are still well within the awkward attendance threshold though in that there is an interest in getting back to into guild only 25-man raids, but not enough people (the semi-PuGs just aren’t the same. Fuck random people).

I keep meaning to run the new 5-mans (hilt hilt hilt hilt) and the daily random more regularly, but a longish commute during rush hour sort of kills a significant portion of my play time. I got a few more tanking upgrades though during last week’s raid and from badges, etc. I really need to work on improving that gear and macro set (awesome guild member posted a bunch of really good ones on the forum a while ago, must find). My raid time is actually pretty evenly split between tanking and DPSing at the moment, with perhaps a slight bias towards DPSing.

Other games that I have been playing: Modern Warfare 2 was fun. I am not really certain has to how much value I received for my $50 given that the single player campaign is short and the multiplayer is gimped to hell. Like the first  game, MW2 retains the same fast pacing and excellent narrative. But at the same time, there are many instances where the game feels distinctly on rails with whack-a-mole-esque gameplay and obviously triggered scenes. Lots of fun either way. I wish there was a co-op option for the entire campaign rather than select missions. More games need co-op.

But anyway, since it is unlikely that I will squeeze out another post before the end of the year: I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I’m Still Here & Patch 3.3

WoWScrnShot_120909_210238

Okay, so I have a half-assed Borderlands review rotting in my temporary post bin. Long story short, I started a new job a little while ago. So between that, the upcoming holidays and what not, much of what I was going to post on this site kind of got pushed to the back burner. Oh so I built my new computer a couple of weeks ago and zomg, I can raid 25-man instances again without locking up or dropping below five frames per second. Yay! The video card that I wanted (Radeon HD 5870 wasn’t in stock anywhere…I’ll have to order that later :/

PuGs: For the past month or so, my guild has been running regular Wednesday night 25-man PuG runs in Trial of the Crusader to some success. Every week we seem to get close on Anub, but fall a bit short in terms of DPS performance. After our first PuG run, we started holding the loot tokens, patterns and orbs for end loot (separate loot roll table from the other boss drops, which are rolled off after each kill). Doing so seems to have stopped the, “rotating door of PuG members who like the suspiciously perma-DC from the raid” problem for the most part.

3.3: My guild hosted a 25-man Icecrown Citadel semi-PuG raid tonight; Basically in place of TotC in the interest of doing the new content. We cleared trash, did a few attempts at the first boss and then called it a night (we end the raid at 10pm). Not so much luck on Marrowgar, but it’s fun learning new content. Thinking that we will probably have more luck bouncing strats off of one another in guild versus in a 25-man PuG. It’s nice getting input from fresh faces, but kind of a pain getting random ass people to organize in an instance that no one is familiar with. I haven’t had a chance to do any of the new 5-man instances or use the random LFG system. Tomorrow night maybe?

Stuff: I was one and a half achievements short of the thanksgiving title and pet. Totally got busy that weekend and forgot about it. Oh well, at least I have my shiny purple 310% proto-drake. This whole new long ass daily commute + time management thing: I’ll figure it out and start posting more.

Happy Birthday WoW!

Five years eh? Has it really been that long? Well yesterday technically, but I didn’t get a chance to post. Oh by the way: I haven’t gone dormant, just extremely busy.

Keiya’s UI Version 3.2

KeiUI-3.2-Solo

My UI goals this time around were more-or-less the same as any of my UI incarnations. First and foremost, I wanted to keep the center of my screen clear of all clutter, windows and bars. Other than the scrolling combat text on either side of the central box, there shouldn’t be a single thing obscuring my vision of the game. Per usual, any unused elements should automatically vanish or be hide-able when not in use. I strongly dislike layouts with the giant black bar of death across the entire lower third of the screen. It is not only a huge waste of space, but looks really weird when nothing is happening on screen.

4 sets of 12 buttons (48) is what I deemed minimally necessary to remain functional. I love my buttons and can’t really reduce it any further (previous UI versions had 6 sets). 3 of the bars are keybound to my n52te, the 4th being mostly used for random macros and stuff like that. There are two sets of 6 AutoBar buttons on either side of the Dominos bars. I didn’t like the little circular buttons in my previous setup so I moved them to the sides, making use of the wider screen.

  • Left set: Blessings, Auras, BoP, Raid Wall Macro, DI, LoH.
  • Right Set: Health Potions, Mana Potions, Healthstones, Crafting, Food Buffs, Water/Mage Food.

KeiUI-3.2-Raid

I’ve just conceded to the fact that my UI is probably never going to ever be clean and pretty looking mid-encounter no matter how hard I try. So this layout is as minimalistic as I could get it without sacrificing my precious windows and what have you. Actually, all I really did was shuffle a few mods around. It’s a necessary evil I guess, given that I am the raid leader and frequently a tank (I swear that some classes and roles have like, a total of 3 buttons on their screen and little else). Other than the focus frame and any pop-up range warning window from DBM, I think that this is probably the maximum level of crap that I would ever need to have on my screen at any given time.

I went back to the old school thick raid frames versus the skinny perfectraid style bars. Instead of being placed on the left edge of the screen, I have them shoved into the spot to the right of Dominos where Recount and Omen used to be. I am quite happy with this change; the 5 raid groups dock nicely into that spot, leaving the middle almost completely clear. I also moved the party and party target frames to this location.

Omen was moved front and center while recount was shoved in the corner. I wanted to do two things with this interface: one, make use of the gap between the player and target unitframes and two, drag Omen out of the corner into a more prominent position. So this takes care of both. And as far as recount goes, it’s happy over in the upper left corner. There’s really no reason, other than meterwhoring, why I need to or should have to stare at it during an active encounter. I’ve caught myself being a naughty retadin and Recount rubbernecking when I should have been looking for giant flaming balls of poo at my feet or something.

KeiUI-3.2-Party

I went with Dominos (successor to Bongos) instead of Bartender 4 to move all of the interface elements around. It’s a lot easier to keybind and configure, though feature wise I’m not sure if I see much of a difference. But then again, my bar interface needs aren’t really all that exotic. Fubar was replaced with ChocolateBar since it is no longer being updated. I also extended it to cover the entire length of the screen instead of being limited to the small box in my previous UI incarnation. eePanels2 was replaced with kgPanels for the same reason.

Oh: I finally jumped on the Deadly Boss Mods train. There was a point when BigWigs was nicer because of the now defunct WoW Ace Updater compatibility as well as several other things that I don’t remember. I think Big Wigs is still updated more often, but I find the DBM indicators and bars more useful. It’s also seems to be more up to date and complete for newer encounters. It has built in shield monitors for the twins as well as timers for Ony and several other things that were missing from Big Wigs.

To Do
I am not completely happy with how the combat text is layed out. All of the special warnings for all mods dump right into the center, turning it into a clusterfuck whenever something important happens. Visibility isn’t necessarily a bad thing I guess. Being in the center makes them easier to see so that I can react faster, but I could do without the redundancy.

I am also not satisfied with the buff/debuff appearance. I like having the square icons with the timers below them in the upper right hand corner (Elkano style mods bug me), but they are too large and need to extend further leftwards towards the center of the screen. I also need to filter the buffs; Anything that appears on ClassTimer doesn’t need to be up top. Blizzard is changing the default buff interface in 3.3 though so, I’ll see how that goes before searching for yet another addon.

KeiUI-Raid-Labeled

  1. PitBull Unit Frames 4.0: PitBull 4 is quite a bit nicer than 3. It’s not too different in terms of features available, but the setup is much much nicer. Basically, it allows you to create layout templates to apply to different unit frames, versus having to individually chance the player frame then the target frame then the raid frames, etc.Dominos + ButtonFacade: Out of all the bar mods that I have tried, Dominos was the easiest to setup and keybind. Though really, either Dominos or Bartender will suffice. ButtonFacade skins your buttons (works with autobar and dominos).
  2. Autobar: Automatically sorts specific buttons. Eliminates the tedium of repeatedly dragging healthstones and mage water to your action bars. Also works for class stances, blessings, auras and stuff like that.
  3. Omen Threat Meter: I’m winning at threat!
  4. ClassTimer: I use this to track short term buffs, certain abilities and stuff like that.
  5. Deadly Boss Mods: Boss mod of my choice. Nicer in my opinion than BigWigs.
  6. oRA2: It’s like CTRA, but not ass (and has no raid frames). Facilitates tank frames, item checks, zone checks and stuff like that.
  7. Recount: Performance meter. If you go to the deaths screen and click on a name, it will tell you what happened to them. Fairly useful in evaluating performance and diagnosing problems (and epeen stroking. Stroke stroke stroke).
  8. PallyPower: The de facto mod for tracking paladin buffs. Makes blessing assignments a hundred times easier. ARGH, Jesus if you are a paladin just install it so that I don’t have to get up in your junk about what buffs you will do.
  9. SexyMap: Makes the map really swank. But more importantly, it will hide minimap icons. I hate having an excess of minimap icons.

Other Addons
Visible addons that aren’t numbered in the raid screenshot.

  1. kgPanels: The black panel behind Dominos.
  2. Prat 3.0: Chat box mod. Class hilighting, logging, timestamping, etc.Chocolate Bar and Friends: It’s a Fubar/Titan replacement. FuBar2Broker will allow you to use your old Fubar plugins with this mod.
    • FuBar2Broker
    • Broker_repair
    • Broker_Currency
    • ChocolateBar Broker Display
    • Volumizer
    • Broker_CPU Memory
    • FuBar_LootTypeFu
  1. MikScrollingBattleText: Scrolling combat text. It’s a bit lighter in weight than the other scrolling text mods. There was a very specific reason why I chose MSBT over Parrot, but I don’t recall what that reason was…
  2. TipTac: Displays a crapton of stuff on the tooltips
  3. Nameplates modifier: I like seeing percentage values on my nameplate health bars.
  4. OmniCC: Adds cooldown text to all of your buttons.

Fall 09: Things That I Will Post

Keiya-Tier-9I have a couple of things that I want to post about within reasonable time when I’m not so real life busy. So, this is my late October and Early November tentative post schedule: Keiya’s New Raiding UI Version 3.2, Dabbling withAion and Borderlands for the PS3. I might do a CD review in mid to late November because Them Crooked Vultures is releasing an album on the 17th of November and well, I’m a pretty big fan of Dave Grohl.

I impulse bought Aion a couple of weeks ago. I was actually going to do a thorough review and state of the MMO industry post once I had a chance to properly delve into it more, but I have kind of already lost all interest in it. It’s a fun game, but I just kind of got…busy/distracted and set it down. If I’m really bored and game deprived at some point in the future, I’ll go poke at it when I’m not on WoW or doing other things. Borderlands is an interesting game that was just released for the consoles. Think Fallout 3 + Team Fortress 2 + Left 4 Dead. Having fun with it so far.

So I redid my user interface yet again, mostly to switch over from Fubar to ChocolateBar, from Pitbull 3 to Pitbull 4 and from Bartender 4 to Dominos. I also wanted to consolidate the functionality of a few of my addons. My previous setup had a quite a bit of redundancy. Aside from some window shuffling, it really doesn’t look that different I guess. I’m liking it so far though. I don’t know why I do things like this to myself. Redoing your UI is a giant pain in the ass. I spent all of yesterday evening half-assed running battlegrounds and poking shit mobs to make sure that every little element was exactly where it should be.

I was in 25-man Trial of the Crusader last week (well and tonight I guess) when my computer started dropping below 10 frames per second during most of the counters. The resolution increase on my new monitor in addition to the fact that this machine is getting ass old probably doesn’t help. I’m thinking that it’s probably time to start building a new computer. I made the mistake of goingel cheapo on a CPU with a low upgrade path. I think this time I’m going to budget more towards building a nicer machine.

New Monitor and UI Rambling

KeiyaUI-WideRegarding my posts on PuG raid leading: On second thought, disregard any of the strategy explaining advice and just tell people to heed Mortigan the Lock’s rules on how to raid anything. WoW blog post of the week, I lol’d. But seriously, is it really that difficult for people to not stand in a fire?

I think I’ll make more of an effort to blog regularly; Regularly being defined as once a week-ish. So without further adieu. rambling time! AKA non-cohesive bits typed past midnight. All of my daily computer and WoW playing is done in a dual screen setup. It’s great for multitasking; I can raid and watch stupid YouTube videos at the same time! But lately my right monitor, which is a 4 or 5 year old 19″ LCD, has been slowly taking longer and longer to warm-up. It took 5 minutes at the beginning of last week, which was annoying but tolerable because I could just go make a cup of coffee and read something in the mean time. 15 minutes was pushing it and 1 hour meant a trip to the nerd goody store.

So anyway, I replaced it with a 24″. It’s not really that much bigger, but I’ve noticed a reasonable increase in environmental visibility, which helps with the aforementioned task of avoiding circles of fire and keeping an eye on where everyone else is positioned duringcertain encounters. I remember raiding on a setup like this, viewing the game through a small box in the center of the screen. That’s the cleaned up UI too, I ran with a few more items on my screen during our Molten Core phase.

Both monitors are in widescreen format, but for some reason the new monitor has a slightly different ratio. Just different enough to force me to reposition half of my user interface elements. I think it’s about time to redo some of my UI anyway; Primarily upgrading to Pitbull4 and finding a replacement forFubar since the project went perma -dead (I think No Stock UI has an article on that). I guess I’ll make another Keiya’s UI post at some point. I’m pretty happy with my general layout though, so I doubt I will change much.
