I totally caved into a huge itch and switched over to AT&T recently for the sake of getting an iPhone. It has since been the object of my tech obsession. My predictions and wishes for tomorrow's iPhone OS 4.0 announcement.
- Multitasking for non Apple produced applications. I want to be able to text AND still listen to Pandora.
- A new UI doodad: Hopefully in the form of a homescreen enhancement. I keep my phone sync'd with my Google calendar. I would love a summary of the day's appointments on the homescreen along with any mail and message notifications.
- Pseudo file management through iTunes (like how the iPad does it)
- The ability to change the background. iPad does it right? It's my God given right to have the ability to use my own ugly ass background without having to jailbreak my phone :P
- (Maybe) The ability to remove certain first party applications so that I don't have to shove them all onto the last app page and pretend that they don't exist when in reality it bothers me that they are there.
- (Maybe) Software rotation lock....at least in Safari so that I can surf in bed in a non-awkward manner.
- (Probably not) Some form of over the air syncing
- (Probably not) A unified native chat client for both text messaging and services like GTalk and AIM.
- A pony?
If Apple doesn't at least announce multi-tasking the entire internet is going to cry foul. It has been the number one speculation on every single tech site and blog for months on end. Actually to be honest, I can't think of too many things that I really would want to multi-task with other than services like Pandora. Please can we have some sort of rotation lock in Safari? I surf and read things in bed; Playing the tilting game is fucking annoying.
Oh also: I don't know/think that any phone actually does this, but I have always wanted the ability to customize the phone vibration. For example, 1 short pulse for text messages and 2 short pulses for something else.

Blackberries allow you to customize the vibration/ringtones depending on emails, text messages, etc, and I assume Android phones do the same. (Also, most Android phones can do everything you mentioned above . . .)
In fact, why in the world didn't you get an Android-based phone in the first place? You're a tech girl. I expected you to be above the whole "LOL iPhone is pretty!" crowd . . .
Already have apps on the app store, much more available on the app store and don't want to rebuy them. Also, the iPhone is still superior as a music player. Got tired of carrying around two devices. Also, love it or hate it, iTunes makes it super ass easy to sync music, playlists and whatever to your mobile.
Blackberries are much easier to text on (even the touchscreens. They have the nicest touchscreen keyboards imo), but they are still more business than fun :/
Yeah, I know the Blackberries are business machines, and I wouldn't recommend that as an iphone replacement, as they can't do much of the multimedia stuff as well. (Though personally, I use a blackberry because I don't need a multimedia phone and I prefer the business aspect, but that's just me)
However, the music player part is debateable. The audio quality on the iphone is about the same as an ipod, meaning that it's severely lacking. The UI is nice and it has plenty of features, but there are several excellent players available for the android that have just as many, if not more features. But I think the worst aspect of the iphone media player is the dependency on iTunes, which is a sin of its own. The ability to plug your phone into any source, not depending on OS, software, or anything else to get music is a much better concept. (And organizing by folders rather than albums is a much neater and organized concept anyway.)
Semi random question: Does anything else other than iTunes have good podcast support? As in: I listen to half of a show in the car on the way home from work, sync my iphone, listen to the other half at home and visa versa. I do that almost everyday and it integrates so well in iTunes (screw using a separate aggregator >_<;).
It's just something so simple that almost no one does except for Apple who has always done it, why?
